Meet the AVID Teachers and Tutors
Donna Rankin is the AVID Coordinator at Farb, and she teaches two 8th grade AVID elective classes. She works closely with all of the AVID elective teachers, and she provides professional development and resource support to all teachers on site. Ms. Rankin graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed her graduate studies at San Diego State and National University. She enjoys reading, walking on the beach, listening to music, and traveling. Ms. Rankin's personal goals are to travel more and to become an expert in Italian cooking.
Amy Thomas is a elective teacher for 7th Grade AVID and 7th Grade World History. She has been teaching for six years in the San Diego Unified School District and is currently in her first year teaching AVID. She is a San Diego native and attended San Diego State University for both her undergraduate degree and teaching credential. Mrs. Thomas loves to spend time with her family and enjoys hiking, camping, and the beach during the summer months. The greatest joy thus far in teaching AVID is the collaboration during tutorials and the willingness to help one another.
Alicia Colby teaches the 6th grade AVID Elective, 7th Grade World History, 7th Grade English, and the After School Art program. Alicia has been teaching for about 18 years in the San Diego Unified School District (Credentialed in English, History, and Reading Specialist), and taught AVID for 3 years. Alicia grew up in Cadiz, Spain, as a military child and moved to San Diego when she was in 10th grade. Alicia attended San Diego State University for both her BA in English literature and her MA in Literacy. Alicia loves to travel the world, mostly Europe, and to spend time with her family and friends cooking food from her native French Caribbean culture. She is a Netflix, Marvel, and Star Wars fan! After teaching at the High School level for many years, she is so happy to be back in middle school and teaching AVID again!
